In CI, prefer the built-ins: $CI_REGISTRY, $CI_REGISTRY_IMAGE, and $CI_JOB_TOKEN — do not hardcode this hostname.

Health check

A 401 Unauthorized with Docker-Distribution-Api-Version: registry/2.0 is the healthy response — it means the registry is up and asking you to authenticate.
